HCC establishes Leadership Institute
WELDON, N.C. – North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) President Dr. Scott Ralls visited with the Halifax Community College (HCC) Leadership Institute participants on Oct. 12 in The Centre. Other NCCCS staff who visited included Vice President of Business & Finance Jennifer Haygood and General Counsel Shanté Martin.

During his presentation, Ralls talked about leadership. He discussed how the best leaders surround themselves with people who are smarter than they are and how mentors can help those who aspire to be leaders. Ralls also talked about the challenges of community colleges including student completion rates, employment opportunities for those who complete their programs, access and excellence.

Ralls concluded his presentation by talking about characteristics of great leaders. These included:
  • Having integrity and being honest
  • Being competent
  • Having an ability to be inspiring
  • Having an ability to be forward looking
  • Knowing there is a fine line between narcissism and self-confidence
The HCC Leadership Institute kicked off in May on campus with presentations by Nehemiah-The Leadership Company based in Greensboro, N.C. Dr. Donny Hunter, president and CEO of the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees and president of National Search & Education Consulting presented during the September session. The institute is a year-long leadership program for the College’s employees. It is limited to 25 participants and features individual professional development and team-building activities. The institute includes a series of professional seminars and interactive sessions presented by local and state leaders in higher education. The institute is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education PBI Formula Grant.
