Program Description

Federal Pell Grants usually are awarded only to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree. Everyone planning to attend college, regardless of income, should complete the FAFSA as it also helps determine the amount of state aid and institutional aid that a student will receive.

The Next NC Scholarship is a financial aid program that helps most North Carolinians from households making $80,000 or less pursue a higher education by fully covering tuition and fees at any community college in the state.

The best part? It’s money that doesn’t have to be repaid.

It combines the federal Pell Grant with the state-funded financial aid program to form a simplified and predictable scholarship award that is easier to understand and makes education more affordable so a greater number of North Carolinians can pursue a degree.

Please note: This scholarship is for curriculum students enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program.

Earn a tuition-free degree!

Qualifying students attending community college will receive at least $3,000. That means having their tuition and fees 100% covered at any of the 58 North Carolina community colleges. The scholarship award can also go toward books, food, and housing.

A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need.

The FSEOG program is administered directly by the financial aid office.

To get an FSEOG, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form so the financial aid office can determine how much financial need you have. The financial aid office will award FSEOGs to students that have the most financial need. The FSEOG does not need to be repaid, except under certain circumstances.

Each participating school receives a certain amount of FSEOG funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid. Once the full amount of the school’s FSEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG awards can be made for that year. This system works differently from the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides funds to every eligible student.

Assistance with child care expenses from the Child Care Grant Program is contingent upon availability of funds for qualified students enrolled in eligible programs. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office.

The Federal College Work Study Program provides part-time work in academic and administrative departments on campus for eligible students to assist them with paying part of their educational expenses while attending classes. Students must complete the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA®) form, be enrolled at least half-time, and be making satisfactory progress in an eligible program.
