Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) Placement Test

If the applicant graduated from a regionally accredited public high school, private school, or home school within the past ten years:

  • The applicant will be placed into their program’s gateway math and English based on their unweighted high school GPA.
  • An applicant with a GPA of 2.8 or higher may register for any class without mandatory additional support.
  • An applicant with a GPA less than 2.799 must enroll in a transition course.
  • If an applicant does not have a GPA, the RISE Placement test will be required or the applicant must qualify for a waiver.

If the applicant graduated from high school more than ten years ago:

  • The applicant will be required to take the RISE Placement test or the applicant must qualify for a waiver.

NOTE: Halifax Community College does not accept all online high schools

How to Qualify for a RISE Waiver

The RISE Placement Test requirement may be waived by the Director of Admissions upon receipt of the official documentation if the applicant meets one of the following:

  1. Has earned an associate degree or bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Has satisfactorily completed one college-level English and math course at or above the developmental or vocational level at a regionally accredited college or university.
  3. Has a GED with a score of 165 or higher on each section (2014 and later).
  4. Has a HiSET score of 15 on each section and a 4 on the essay (2014 and later).
  5. Has made the following minimum scores on the SAT or ACT:
    1. English:
      1. ACT Scores:
        1. Pre-December 2011: English, Reading and Mathematics scores of 22 or higher.
        2. January 2012-February 2014: English score of 18 or higher, Reading score of 21 or higher, and Mathematics score of 22 or higher
        3. March 2014-Present: English score of 18 or higher, Reading score of 22 or higher, and Mathematics score of 22 or higher.
      2. SAT Scores:
        1. Pre-December 2011: Reading, Writing and Mathematics scores of 510 or higher.
        2. January 2012-February 2016: Critical Reading, English and Mathematics scores of 500 or higher.
        3. March 2016-Present: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score of 480 or higher, and Mathematics score of 530 or higher.
  6. Has taken the ACCUPLACER, Asset, Compass, or North Carolina’s Diagnostic Test and Placement (NC DAP) test within the past ten years

Placement Test Tiers

English - Two Tiers

Tier One: Introduction to College Reading and Writing, Identifying Main Ideas, Discovering Implied Meaning, Interpreting Bias, Analysis through Definition, Learning Across Disciplines

Tier Two: Exploring Comparative Elements, Informed Opinions through Causal Chains, Applied Critical Analysis, Using Sources in Critical Reading and Writing

Math - Three Tiers

Tier One: whole numbers; fractions and mixed numbers; decimals; ratio, proportion, and rates; percent; measurement, geometry, and real numbers

Tier Two: solving equations and inequalities; graphing; exponents and polynomials; concepts in statistics

Tier Three: rational expressions; radical expressions and quadratic equations; factoring; systems of equations and inequalities; and functions

Retesting Policy

Students will be allowed to retake the RISE Placement Test one time per Tier with a score less than 70. The results of the test will place students into gateway Math and English or into a transition course. Mastery of the transition course will allow students to achieve levels that will allow them to take gateway courses.

Additional Information

  • The applicant will be placed into their program’s gateway math and English based on their unweighted high school GPA.

  • If an applicant does not have a GPA, the RISE Placement test will be required or the applicant must qualify for a waiver.
  • The RISE Placement Test may take two to four hours to complete. Students may take the test in sections over several days if preferred.
  • The test is by appointment only. Please contact the Academic Support & RISE Transition Coordinator to schedule your appointment.
  • Testing will be conducted in the 300 Building, Room 338.
  • Students must present a valid photo ID to take the RISE Placement Test.
  • Students requiring accommodations with a documented disability should contact the Director of Counseling at (252) 536-7207
  • There is no cost for the test.
  • If a student has tested within the last 10 years at another college, the student must contact that college and request Placement Test scores be emailed to [email protected].
  • We cannot accept the Accuplacer Nextgen.

HESI Testing

Prior to test day, go to the cashier’s office in Building 300, and pay the examination fee of $60.00; please keep this receipt for your records. Bring a copy of your receipt to Room 338 on examination day. On test day, also bring your ID and a pencil. No outside food or drinks permitted. Please come 15 minutes prior to your scheduled test.

CRC WorkKeys Test

Select a test date for the CRC Assessment from the dates listed below. If you are unable to attend your test date, or need a date that is not listed below please contact Ms. Tonia Lashley at [email protected] at least 24 hours in advance.

Please Note: If accommodations are needed please contact the campus counselor Ms. Barbara Plum @ [email protected] or (252) 536-7207 for assistance, before registering for the exam.

Test Time: 9:00 am each day – unless adjustments have been made prior to testing date and time.

Test Location: Room 338 (next door to Financial Aid)

Items required for admission on test day: Valid ID and Receipt of payment.

Items NOT Allowed in the Testing Center: Electronic Devices, Food, Drinks

Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)

The CAE is an extension of the classroom that provides Academic Enrichment (AE) tutoring services and supplemental instruction for students who are currently enrolled at Halifax Community College.

Free, on-campus and virtual tutoring is available for Halifax Community College (HCC) students in many subjects. Tutoring takes place on the main campus in the Center for Academic Excellence Building 100, Rooms 147 and 149. Any currently enrolled HCC student can obtain a tutor simply by completing the digital form below. Upon completion of this form, the Academic Support Coordinator and Testing Coordinator will pair you with a tutor that matches your needs and availability.

(Offers tutoring in all academic areas w/ referral from faculty)
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Monday – Thursday);
8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Friday)

Hours of operation may vary during student breaks, holidays, inclement weather, and registration. Any changes in hours of operation will be posted.
