Phlebotomy (Certificate) (C45600)

Overview of Program

The phlebotomy curriculum prepares individuals to obtain blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis. Phlebotomists are healthcare professionals who collect blood samples from patients or donors. They process blood and other patient samples for many different laboratory tests. They are a vital member of the laboratory team and they function as the ambassadors for the whole laboratory team.

Course requirements

Coursework includes proper specimen collection and handling, communication skills, and maintaining patient data.

Program Admission requirements

  1. Submit an HCC application.
  2. High School Graduate or received a high school equivalency certificate.
  3. Schedule interviews with phlebotomy program faculty.
  4. Successfully complete background check and drug screen.
  5. A selective admissions process determines official admission to the phlebotomy program.
  6. Must be 18 years or older before starting PBT 100.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  1. Physical Examination Form-Completed by a Healthcare Provider
  2. The immunizations below
    • Tetanus or Tdap (Within 10 years)
    • Influenza
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 Immunizations or Positive titers)
    • Varicella (2 immunizations or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (Series of 3 immunizations or positive titer or a signed letter of declination)
    • COVID vaccine
  3. Results of two TB skin tests within the past 12 months of attending clinical rotations, or negative chest X-ray results within the past five years for a history of positive TB skin test.
  4. Criminal background checks/drug screening exams per clinical agency requirements (NOT required for HCC admission must use our department form.
  5. Must have a paid subscription to Rotation Manager for clinical rotations.
  6. Must have liability insurance purchased through the College.

Possible Employment Opportunities

Graduates may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, and other healthcare settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians.

Upon successfully completing the program, you will be eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification examination.Completion of the Phlebotomy curriculum does not guarantee success in passing the ASCP BOC exam.
