HCC Local African-American Heroes Nomination Deadline extended to Jan. 18
WELDON, N.C. – Four years ago, Halifax Community College (HCC) held its first-ever "Saluting Our African-American Heroes" event. Due to their accomplishments, several people from the community have been recognized for their hard work and dedication.

To continue that tradition, nominations are being accepted for this year’s hero event. The nomination deadline was originally slated for Jan. 6, but has now been extended to Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. by mail or online submission. The nomination includes completion of a short form and submission of a brief essay detailing qualities in identified areas.

Along with this basic information, the nomination must include an essay that addresses each of four qualities listed below that are used as the selection criteria. The narrative should expand and focus on specific examples that demonstrate the nominee’s commitment and unique contributions to the Roanoke Valley. Any citizen of the African-American community is eligible to be considered for this nomination.

The narrative should describe the nominee’s qualities in the following areas:
  1. Commitment and contributions to the community
  2. Unselfish devotion to others
  3. Initiative, innovation and leadership in the region
  4. Willingness to share time and wisdom through service to the community and its citizens
