Halifax Community College (HCC) Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) cadets graduated in a ceremony on campus, Dec. 15. This marked HCC’s 39th BLET Academy graduation. Northampton County Sheriff’s Office provided the Honor Guard.

Graduates included Deputy Jeffrey Barnes, Deputy Jimmy Bracey, Deputy Ray Campbell, Cadet Tim Carroll, Cadet Jackie DeAnda, Deputy Erin Gregory, Deputy Marvin Harrell, Cadet Kristopher Jordan, Cadet Teanna Lassiter, Deputy Edward Lee and Cadet Jessica Sampson.

Awards and recognition were also presented. Deputy Jeffrey Barnes was recognized as class president. The Academic Excellence award went to Deputy Jimmy Bracey who also earned the Physical Fitness award. Deputy Barnes garnered the Top Gun and Top Driver awards. Deputy Ray Campbell earned the Outstanding Cadet award.

Roanoke Rapids Police Department Deputy Chief of Police Major Adam Bondarek gave the keynote address.

Bondarek talked about some things graduates need to do as law enforcement officers. He emphasized that graduates need to treat people like they want to be treated. He advised cadets to get to know the people in the communities they serve, take nothing for what it seems and to listen to their intuition. He also suggested that graduates take advantage of training opportunities, to always tell the truth and to stay out of the office rumor mill.

“You are the example…you’re not going to be perfect…just know that you’re the one who is going to set the example,” he said.

Bondarek added that the law enforcement community is a brotherhood and a family and that law enforcement officers need to have a belief in a higher power, family and friends, be true to self, have confidence and never quit.
