Continuing Ed students learn fundamentals of cake decoration, design

Students in Halifax Community College’s (HCC) Continuing Education class, “Basic Cake Decorating” have learned many things in a few short weeks during the Monday evening classes. Kim Gallien, a Wilton certified instructor, explained that students have learned about basic cake decorating design and making borders, flowers and other decorative elements.

According to Gallien, since access to bakeries is limited in the area and professionally-made cakes can be expensive, many people choose to make and decorate their own cakes. “It’s messy, but fun,” she added.

“Wilton Method—Gum Paste & Fondant,” held on Mondays, starts Oct. 25. Tuesday evening classes in basic cake decorating started earlier this month.  Other Tuesday classes include “Wilton Method—Flower & Cake Design,” which begins Oct. 5 and “Wilton Method—Gum Paste & Fondant,” which starts Nov. 9. More classes are planned for January.

Pre-registration is recommended. Cost is $25 for each class. Register in the Continuing Education Office in Building 400 or call (252) 536-7216, (252) 536-7261 or (252) 538-4313 for details.
