HCC holds faculty-staff orientation

Halifax Community College faculty and staff attended orientation sessions, Aug. 2-3 on campus.

The opening session included a welcome and college update from HCC President, Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr., a budget update from Vice President for Administrative Services Deborah Armstrong and guest speaker Dr. Virgie Binford.

During her session, Binford talked about getting unity of purpose, “In unity, there is strength.”

She also discussed the “five impossibles” including: it is impossible to lead where you do not go, to teach what you do not know, to live what you do not live, to share experiences you have not had and to return from where you have not been.

“You know that you are prepared to do your very best,” Binford stressed to faculty and staff. “We must never stop until our good is better and our better is best.”

Updates were also given on FERPA, Skype and division work.

Dr. Beverly Epps and Dr. Julie Dilday led a faculty professional development session on the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan. Faculty participated in an activity where they created masterpieces for the HCC QEP Gallery Walk.

On the second day of training, Allen McCullough of the Environmental Health & Safety Institute talked about workplace and home safety.

“Teach students the relationship between cleanliness in the classroom, lab or shop and safety,” he said.

Faculty and staff then had hands-on, mandatory fire extinguisher training. Later in the day, break-out sessions were conducted including information on Datatel, WebAdvisor, Tools for Success, and Creating a Culture of Respect.
