Hawkins addresses HCC audience for Women’s History Month observance

Local author and inspirational speaker Willie Mae Hawkins spoke to a Halifax Community College audience during an event sponsored by the Women of Excellence mentoring group in celebration of Women’s History Month, March 16. Hawkins discussed her life experiences and the books that she has authored including “She Builds a Vineyard: A Single Parent’s Struggle to Survive.”


Originally from Enfield, Hawkins was at one point a single mother on welfare. Now, she is an inspirational speaker, teacher, preacher and author. She has served as a therapist in mental health rendering counseling services to adults and children, an adjunct religion instructor, and a hospital chaplain providing pastoral care and counseling. Her talk focused on spending time with her Creator, following His plan for her life and encouraging others to have balance in their lives and to reach for their dreams.


Hawkins holds degrees from Nash Community College, Barton College, Virginia Union University, and is pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree at Regent University. She is the founder and executive director of Spring, Inc., a national single parenting ministry.
