HCC participates in Firefighters' Day
live fire class
Halifax Community College (HCC) participated in the Halifax County Firefighters Association Third Annual Firefighters' Day on May 2 at the Becker Village Mall in Roanoke Rapids N.C. The event ended with a live fire class hosted by HCC at the mall to not only teach firefighters how to handle large propane fires, but also to demonstrate to spectators the capabilities of their local firefighters and the hazards faced. The class simulates two different styles of propane gas fires which can be very hot with training flames reaching up into the air 60 feet or greater. Due to the immense heat from these fires they often cannot be put out with normal water tactics. These fires take extra specialized training to fight, extinguish and secure the leak. This class also requires great team work and teaches the firefighters how to work together in coordinated attacks and operations.
