HCC Leadership Institute holds April session
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) held its April Leadership Institute session on April 24 at the Hilton Garden Inn. Dr. Donny Hunter spoke at the event.

Hunter is the president and CEO of the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees and president of National Search and Education Consulting. In his private business, he conducts searches for college presidents and provides leadership training for administrators and governing boards. He is a sought after speaker, teacher and facilitator with an interactive style and an approach to leadership training that emphasizes practicality and common sense rather than theories of leadership.

During the session, Hunter discussed the differences between being a leader and being a manager.

“As a manager, many times you have to place blame, which sounds like a negative,” said Hunter, who went on to explain that managers have to understand what went wrong in a situation so that it will not be repeated. “As the leader of an organization, many times you have to 'cover' your staff…The leader always gets the blame.”

Hunter added that although a leader might consider one of the biggest mistakes s/he could make to be hiring the wrong person for a position, “really the biggest mistake is keeping the wrong person in a position and allowing that to hurt your organization.”

The Institute was established in May 2012 under the direction of HCC President/CEO Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. and Sherida Gholston, leadership coordinator. Guest speakers who participate in the Institute come from all walks of life. Many have years of experience working in higher education. The goal of the Institute is for participants to seek to obtain the knowledge and training that is necessary to become effective leaders within the community college system and beyond. Institute events are funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education PBI Formula Grant.
