WELDON, N.C. – September is Literacy Month at Halifax Community College (HCC). The College's Literacy Education Center has hosted a number of activities in recognition of the month including:
  • Prize drawing for students with special accomplishments.
  • Literacy Skills Instructor Brenda Cousins performed each Monday for the “Read Out Loud” activity. Students gathered to listen to the storytelling performance. At the end of each performance, students were asked questions about the story and allowed to comment.

  • Literacy Skills Instructor Stephanie Davis conducted weekly “Word Wall” lessons. Students were provided words along with definitions, parts of speech, synonyms and antonyms. The students participated in activities in which they had to learn to spell and use the words in sentences. Students were awarded prizes at the end of each week.
  • Literacy Skills Instructor George Holley assisted students with taking the official GED practice test on the computer. Students were allowed to take the practice test free of charge. The remaining free practice test dates are Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
  • Literacy Skills Instructor Mike Nagorski provided students an opportunity to participate in reading articles from magazines such as Smithsonian, Mother Earth News and Our State. Students were asked to write small summaries of what was read for the articles.
  • Literacy Skills Instructor Laura Shields provided students an opportunity to learn how to use the Internet for research. Students created email accounts, and searched the Internet for reading and vocabulary development websites.
