Constitution Day 2014 held at HCC
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) held its Constitution Day 2014 on Sept. 17 in The Centre. HCC English Instructor Sandra Weden welcomed the audience to the program. HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. gave opening remarks and quizzed students on aspects of the Constitution. Those who answered correctly received a prize.

Derek Lewis, HCC history instructor made a presentation titled "Intellectual Property Rights and the Constitution." During the presentation, Lewis covered:
  • Commerce Clause
  • Copyrights
  • Design patents
  • Fair Use Doctrine
  • Fanfiction
  • Plagiarism
  • Trade secrets
  • Trademarks
  • Utility patents
"We want you to be creative," said Lewis. "It doesn’t matter if you are inventing, writing or performing, we want each of you to pursue your artistic vision and know that you are protected by the Constitution—you are protected by law."

Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the Constitution of the United States and those who have become citizens. Any educational institution that receives federal funding must provide an educational program about Constitution Day.
