HCC hosts SACSCOC Forum for faculty and staff

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) hosted an All College Council Open Forum for faculty and staff to learn more about the fifth-year review for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) on March 18 in The Centre. SACSCOC Vice President Dr. Charles Taylor led the forum. Points of discussion included:

  • Fifth-year report’s purpose and importance
  • Impact of the Quality Enhancement Plan and the College’s responsibility
  • Importance of faculty, staff and student involvement
  • Data impact and other expectations
Taylor presented an "Overview of the Fifth-Year Interim Review Process & Tips for Submission." Introduced by HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr., Taylor is a veteran educator and now functions as a liaison for SACSCOC. "He knows what we are going through in this process," said Griffin. HCC’s fifth-year report is due in September 2016.

Taylor highlighted the steps in the process and the possible results. He also discussed the parts of the report including core components, comprehensive standards and federal requirements. He noted the most cited and least cited standards and emphasized the need for evidence and documentation.

"This process gives you a chance to brag about what you’re doing…It’s not about the report, but what you do every day…You make a difference in the lives of every single individual who walks up to you," said Taylor.

SACSCOC is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting, higher education institutions in the southern states. For more details, visit www.sacscoc.org/.
