WELDON, N.C. Halifax Community College (HCC) held its annual Founders Day program on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. in The Centre. This year's Founders Day honored past and present HCC Foundation Inc. board members for their support and dedication to HCC. Alumni and Student Government Association officers, past and present, were also recognized.

Dr. Elton L. Newbern Jr., former HCC president, delivered the Founders Day address. He highlighted different events in his career as well as HCC's history. "It is fitting to stop and reflect on the contributions that HCC has made to the community and to the citizens of the Roanoke Valley," added Newbern.

In addition to honoring board members, faculty and staff emeritus awards were also presented. HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. presided over the event and commended HCC for its accomplishment of being ranked #12 of the nation's top 50 community colleges according to the 2013 Washington Monthly college rankings.

Finally, Judy Oglesby was recognized as a distinguished alumna with the first Alumna Award. Her son, Trace Oglesby, a Roanoke Valley Early College sophomore, accepted the award on her behalf. He quoted his mother as saying, "Never settle for less than your dreams. Reach for it, plan it and never take no for an answer."

The event was free and open to the public and celebrated HCC's 46 years of service to the Roanoke Valley. A luncheon was served immediately after the program.
