HCC PRESIDENT HONORED BY
Halifax Community College President Dr.
Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. was presented a distinguished service
award from London Missionary Baptist Church, Feb. 16 during
the Black History Observance, “A Moment In Time: Past and
Present.” The honor was given in recognition of Griffin's
exceptional leadership and devoted service to the Roanoke
“Dedication to service and to our communities is a duty all
of us should take seriously, but for those that God has
given so much, an equal amount of service is required,” said
Griffin in response to the award.
Griffin explained that if he could attain his educational
goals, so could today's young students. Coming from a family
where his father attended school through the third grade,
his mother was a high school graduate and he lived in a
four-room house with eight other siblings, Griffin was the
first in his family to graduate from college and earn a
doctorate from Virginia Tech.
“I am sure that I am not the first person that God has put
together the purpose and passion and grew them into the
opportunity to carry out what he wants me to do while on
this earth. I believe what I am doing is my ministry,” said
