Alumni Spotlight ➤ Jennifer & Jonathan Furr: Strength in Partnership—A Couple’s Journey Together in Nursing School

In a world where it’s often tough to balance personal and professional goals, the story of Jennifer P. Furr and Jonathan Furr stands out as especially inspiring. After 25 years of marriage, the Furrs celebrated a significant milestone by graduating together from Halifax Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program in May 2025. Their journey exemplifies perseverance, teamwork, and the strength that comes from shared objectives and mutual encouragement.

Before enrolling in the ADN program, both Jennifer and Jonathan brought years of healthcare experience to the table. Jennifer had worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) since 2009, primarily in home health care, while Jonathan had served in EMS and the fire service since the age of 18, becoming a paramedic in 2012. With deep roots in caregiving and community service, it was only natural that they would pursue the next step in their healthcare careers—together.

For Jennifer, the decision to return to school came after years of encouragement from her husband. “Jon has been pushing me for years to go back and get my RN,” she shared. Jonathan, meanwhile, sought a more stable work environment and increased pay, prompting him to consider nursing as a new chapter. They found Halifax’s ADN program to be a practical fit: the schedule allowed Jennifer to continue working, and it offered flexibility that meshed well with Jonathan’s existing commitments.

The decision to enroll together wasn’t made lightly. The couple recognized the potential for their strengths to complement one another—and they were right. Jennifer found Jonathan’s experience with critical care invaluable, particularly in areas such as cardiac nursing. In turn, she supported him in grasping the long-term care aspects of nursing. Studying together wasn’t always easy due to differing schedules, but when they could, they helped each other sharpen their skills.

Their 25-year marriage proved to be a solid foundation throughout the program’s challenges. “We’ve helped each other through stress before,” Jennifer noted. “So we had some experience with managing it.” Sharing responsibilities, such as commuting, lightened the load, and their sons—ages 20 and 24—pitched in with household tasks.

Still, there were moments of tension. “Nursing school is very stressful, especially toward the end,” Jennifer admitted. “Nerves get frayed. But being with each other for so long, you learn not to take things personally and just move forward.” Jonathan echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of not making it a competition.

The Furrs also credit their extended family and community support network with helping them stay focused. “We live near a lot of family,” Jonathan said. “That made a big difference.”

Jennifer, who has earned her RN credentials, and Jonathan who will be taking the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), are both taking steps to advance their careers. Jennifer is taking on a new position in the admissions department of her home health company and intends to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Jonathan has accepted a job in the emergency department at UNC Health Lenoir in Kinston, North Carolina, and plans to also obtain his BSN.

To other married couples considering returning to school together, the Furrs offer practical advice: Give each other grace, avoid unnecessary competition, and keep communication open. For high school graduates interested in nursing, they stress the importance of hands-on experience and people skills. “Start at the CNA level,” Jennifer suggests. “It gives you a great perspective.” Jonathan adds, “You have to be able to work with all kinds of people.”

Jennifer and Jonathan Furr’s experience in the ADN program showcases the strength of their partnership and the profound impact of education. Their journey was about more than just obtaining degrees; it was a testament to growing stronger together through mutual encouragement, a common goal, and diligence. As they anticipate their new nursing careers, their story stands as a powerful reminder that dedication and collaboration can lead to remarkable accomplishments. It serves as inspiration for future nurses and anyone who believes it’s never too late to chase their aspirations, especially with a supportive partner by their side.
