Halifax Community College's Literacy Education program offers Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development® (GED), English Language Acquisition, Students with Disabilities, and Self-Improvement components. Classes are available for individuals desiring to improve academically and personally, increase opportunities for gainful employment or promotions, continue educational goals, assist children with homework and/or strengthen skills which makes one more prepared to participate in new or existing industries in the Roanoke Valley and beyond.
HCC has an open-door policy in Workforce & Economic Development for everyone who has the need and desire to learn. Any adult 18 years of age or older may enroll in HCC's Literacy Education program. The parent or legal guardian of individuals 16-17 years of age must contact Dr. Tamba O. Thompson, director of literacy education at (252) 536-7235 to schedule a face-to-face meeting and request drop-release paperwork to be eligible to receive high school equivalency instruction and to take high school equivalency assessments.
New and returning students (who have not attended classes 90 days or longer) are required to attend New Student Orientation sessions. Students attending off-campus classes are able to enroll on the days that classes meet. Our highly qualified and motivated instructors provide individualized and group instruction that involve real-life situations. Additionally, instruction is provided by utilizing magazines, newspapers, videos, computerized instruction, etc.
On January 2, 2014 the GED® Testing Services began the new 2014 GED® tests. The new GED® tests are computer-based but not offered online through the internet. In 2016, Halifax Community College began offering the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) and Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) which is offered by computer and/or paper-based but it is not offered online through the internet.
The General Educational Development (GED®) exam, the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET)® and the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) offer high school equivalency credentials to individuals who did not obtain a high school diploma. Individuals have a choice to take the GED® exam, the HiSET exam or TASC exam which will lead to the same High School Equivalency Diploma. Classes do not have registration fees. However,students are required to pay examination fees. In North Carolina, all students taking the GED® examination are required to pay a total of $80, which covers the entire battery of GED® tests. The 2014 GED® testing series consist of literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. In North Carolina, all students taking the HiSET examination are required to pay a total of $50 and all students taking the TASC is required to pay $54 which covers the entire battery of tests. The HiSET and TASC testing series consist of reading, writing, science, social studies and mathematics. Currently, the first two GED? HiSET?, and TASC® retakes are free in North Carolina. The new GED?, HiSET(R) and TASC tests are aligned with the state?s Common Core Standards. These new assessments are designed to help prepare students to be college and career ready.
For students who have taken GED® tests before 2014 and did not complete GED® requirements, these GED® tests have expired and you must start over. However, motivated and qualified instructors are in place to help you reach your educational goals!

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?
Students are responsible for their own transportation. The Choanoke Public Transportation Authority (CPTA) is available to provide transportation providing the clients meet requirements and pay necessary fees. Please call CPTA at (252) 539-2022 to obtain additional information about their transportation requirements.
