Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes prepare students for the reading, writing and math requirements needed for life, college, and the workplace. Instructors team up with students to improve in areas that assessments and the students indicate are areas of limited skillfulness.
Some classes are designed to provide basic literacy level instruction, while others are designed to prepare for the GED/High School Equivalency Exams. Basic education instruction is offered by face-to-face and distance learning/online.
Classes do not have registration fees. However, students are required to pay examination fees. In North Carolina, all students taking the GED® Examination are required to pay a total of $104 and individuals taking the HiSET® computer-based exam battery must pay $75 that covers the entire battery of High School Equivalency exams.
Passing either one of the assessments will lead to the same High School Equivalency Credential.
The mission of Halifax Community College’s (HCC) College and Career Readiness Program (CCR) is to offer adults, sixteen- and seventeen-year-old not currently enrolled in high school the opportunity to improve their basic education to gain the necessary knowledge for success in life, employment and/or higher education.
HCC has an open-door policy in Workforce & Economic Development for everyone who has the need and desire to learn. Any adult 18 years of age or older may enroll in HCC’s College and Career Readiness Program.
Attending a New Student Orientation is required to enroll. All students must attend an orientation to complete the enrollment process. You will be given Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). The TABE test determines your class placement. Please contact (252) 538-4332 or [email protected].
Students 16/17 years old must meet with HCC’s College and Career Readiness Program Director and complete Parent and School District Consent Forms before enrollment.
