OUR HISTORY

The TRIO Programs are federally funded programs designed to help eligible students prepare for, enter, remain in, and successfully complete postsecondary education. The TRIO programs began with Upward Bound in 1964, Talent Search in 1965, and Student Support Services in 1968.

At Halifax Community College, TRIO Student Support Services provides eligible participants with individualized academic and supportive services designed to promote academic achievement, persistence, graduation, and transfer. Services may include academic advising, tutoring and academic support, career and transfer guidance, financial literacy education, assistance with navigating college resources, and other services authorized under the TRIO Student Support Services program.

OUR MISSION

The TRiO Student Support Services program offers academic development opportunities, helps students meet basic college requirements, and encourages them to complete their postsecondary education successfully. The main goal of TRiO Student Support Services is to boost college retention and graduation rates among participants and assist students in progressing through higher education levels.

Who is Eligible

You’re eligible to join the HCC TRiO Student Support Services if you meet these criteria:

  • You are a U.S. citizen or National, or you meet the residency requirements for Federal student financial assistance.
  • You are currently enrolled at HCC, or you have been accepted to enroll in the next academic term.
  • You have a need for academic support.
  • You are income-eligible, a first-generation college student (neither of your parent(s)/guardians earned a four-year degree), or you are an individual with disabilities.

Advising Services

TRiO Student Support Services provides individualized advising designed to help eligible participants successfully navigate their college experience and achieve their educational goals.

Through TRiO advising, participants can receive support with:

  • Developing individualized academic plans
  • Selecting courses and planning each semester
  • Understanding academic requirements and college policies
  • Monitoring academic progress and identifying areas for improvement
  • Connecting with tutoring and other academic support services
  • Exploring career and transfer opportunities
  • Developing strategies for academic success and persistence
  • Connecting with appropriate campus and community resources
  • Preparing for graduation and successful transition to four-year institutions or the workforce

Mon - Thurs. 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Fri. 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 
(Summer Hours may vary)

TRiO advisors work with participants throughout their enrollment at Halifax Community College to provide guidance, monitor progress, and connect students with resources that support continued academic success.

How to Apply

Follow this simple 2-step process to apply for TRiO- Student Support Services:

  1. Submit an online application (Student Support Services Application) or visit the our office in the 300 Building- Suite 337 to pick up a paper application.
  2. After you apply, the Director of TRiO will reach out to you with next steps.

HCC Has Extended Hours!
