HCC to Host Sen. Erica Smith as 51st Commencement Speaker
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) is proud to announce that the Honorable Sen. Erica D. Smith, will be the 2018 commencement speaker. Commencement exercises will take place on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. at The Griffin Centre.

Sen. Erica Smith was first elected to the North Carolina General Assembly in 2014, making history as the first woman to serve the district in the Senate. She was awarded the Freshman Legislator of the Year in 2016 by the State Employees Association of NC for her tireless efforts for her constituents.

"We are excited and honored that the Sen. Smith has accepted our invitation to provide the keynote address for our fifty-first Commencement ceremony," said Dr. Michael A. Elam, president of HCC. “Those in attendance will benefit significantly from what I believe will be a timely and pertinent message from a top state official addressing current issues.”

Sen. Smith also received the Lillian's List Political Courage Award in 2017 and was awarded the League of Conservative Voter's Rising Star Green Tie the same year. She is the immediate past first-vice moderator and the only woman in the association's 135+ year history elected to serve in a moderator capacity.

Sen. Smith is committed to living out Erma Bombeck's quote: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘Lord, I used everything you gave me.’”
