Elam to be Installed as Fifth President
WELDON, N.C. – On Sept. 14, Dr. Michael A. Elam will be installed as the fifth president of Halifax Community College (HCC).

Elam took office on February 1, beginning his tenure as president. Since joining HCC, he has made strides to increase enrollment, expand the reach of HCC’s training programs, and enhance the technical education and curriculum areas of the College, as well as increasing the aesthetics of the campus.

His installation is part of the 50th Founders Day celebration at HCC. It was fitting to join the two momentous occasions, as Elam is tasked with taking the College in to the future by building on the legacy of success.

"I see Halifax Community College being recognized as a high-performing educational and training institution with exceptional programs and services that exceed the expectations of all those we serve," Elam said. "We will establish an Advanced Manufacturing and Renewable Energy Institute that will expand our capacity in Industrial Systems, Welding, Automotive Technology and Solar Technology. I am proud to have been selected the fifth president of Halifax Community College, and I am honored that the Board of Trustees deemed it important to celebrate my selection with an installation ceremony."

Prior to coming to HCC, Elam served served as President at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie, NC and College of the Mainland in Texas City, TX. He also served as Interim Chancellor for both Sowela Technical Community College and Central Louisiana Technical Community College in Lake Charles and Alexandria, LA respectively. In addition, Dr. Elam served as the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives for the Louisiana Community & Technical College System.

Elam earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and a Master of Education degree in student personnel administration from Howard University. He earned a Doctorate of Education at Nova Southeastern University in higher educational leadership. He and his wife Maxine currently reside in Roanoke Rapids, NC and they have two adult children and four grandchildren.
