HCC to Host Students for Advanced Manufacturing Day
WELDON, N.C. – On Thursday, April 13, Halifax Community College (HCC), with support from the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, area businesses and local school districts, will host an Advanced Manufacturing and STEM Careers Awareness Day.

From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., more than 280 middle and high school students will have the opportunity to meet with leaders in the advanced manufacturing industry, as well as leaders in STEM careers, to learn more about opportunities available. Participants will have the opportunity to discover career pathways that will help guide students in to the multiple fields, as well as learn about the degrees available to further their careers.

Several companies in the area are offering presentations and demonstrations throughout the day, encouraging students to do more with STEM careers. The participating companies are Bones Toyota, Center for Energy Education, Enviva Pellets, Halifax Reginal Medical Center, Klausner Lumber, PCB Piezotronics, Weldon Steel, Kennametal, Reser's Fine Foods, Cummins, Patch Rubber, Pelican Packaging Company, AT&T North Carolina, and West Frasier Mill.

The 2017 Advanced Manufacturing and STEM Careers Awareness Day is sponsored by AT&T North Carolina, Enviva, Follett Corporation, Patch Rubber Company, Pelican Packaging Company, and Reserís Fine Foods.

STEM careers, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, are focused on in-depth problem solving and unique solution paths that further all fields. Some of these careers include industrial and civil engineers, medical scientists, computer designers, and economists. Advanced Manufacturing careers use innovative technology to improve or enhance current products or processes. These careers include robotics, nanotechnology, electromechanical equipment.
