Donors and students honored by HCC Foundation Inc.
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) Foundation Inc. has awarded 105 scholarships to 72 HCC students, totaling $73,420 for the 2014-15 academic year. The list of scholarship recipients follows.

Generous individuals, businesses, civic and professional groups make scholarship awards possible. The scholarships vary in amount and selection criteria. Donors and scholarship recipients were honored during the annual Donor Recognition Luncheon and Scholarship Awards Ceremony, Oct. 27. The luncheon was sponsored by PNC Bank.

Allen Purser, Executive Director of the HCC Foundation Inc. began the event by reminding everyone that the day was one of celebration. "We are celebrating the generosity of donors, and the impact they have on our students."

To the students in the room, Mr. Purser said, "You are getting a great education, and you will be the leaders of this community. We’re proud of you."

Shawn Fredericks, an HCC student, spoke to donors specifically about what the scholarships have done for his educational career. "This was the first time I could go in the bookstore to get my books without having to micromanage everything," he said. "I didn’t have to worry about how much something cost, because I knew I could afford it. My scholarships have strengthened my identity as both a scholar and a student by reminding me that I am on the right track."

"Scholarships are important to the Halifax Electric Cooperative," said Brady Martin, manager of marketing and economic development for the Halifax Electric Membership Corporation. "We are privileged to have an institution to partner with us to improve the cooperative and the community in Halifax County."

To end the luncheon, Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, president of HCC, took the time to offer his sincere gratitude to the donors who have given generously over the years. "We recognize that there are many organizations available that could benefit from their generosity, and we appreciate that they choose to support HCC," he said. "Because of our donors, the future for our students, and the ones who will come in the future, is secure and very bright. We are most grateful for all they have done."
