Halifax Community College Develops New Program With DSS
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College, in conjunction with four other community colleges in the state, has started its first offering of an Income Maintenance Certification.

The program, started on Sept. 20, meets three nights per week and consists of 93 total hours. Completion of the program allows students to immediately work for any Department of Social Services (DSS) office in the state, as the credential is transferable to any county.

"The best thing about the program is the cost structure," said Tiffany Hale, director of the program at HCC. "The first 45 hours are free if the individual is unemployed, or their income if 200% below the poverty level. The second phase of the program, 48 hours, is currently only $125."

The full program introduces students to both the terminology and the technology necessary to successfully navigate the income maintenance program in NC. It also teaches students many employability skills, including developing resumes and interview techniques.

"I have always wanted to be in social work, so this was a great way for me to start," said Jasmine Jones, a current HCC student in the program. "I was told it was a good opportunity, and since Iíve been in it, Iíve learned a whole lot that I didnít know."

"Just because you are not in DSS or taking HRD classes doesnít mean you shouldnít take this program," said Tamekia Conner, another current HCC student in the program. "I started to skip this, but I have learned so much and am thankful I was told about it."

The program takes 11 weeks to complete, and there is currently a waiting list. However, anyone interested is encouraged to contact Tiffany Hale at thale314a@halifaxcc.edu, or 252-536-6342.
