HCC Leadership Institute hosts Graduation 2016 |
|
WELDON, N.C. – The Halifax Community College (HCC) Leadership Institute held a graduation ceremony on May 25. Fourteen HCC faculty and staff completed the program. Sherida Gholston was the institute's coordinator and Dr. Ervin Griffin, Sr. was the institute mentor/facilitator. Graduates included:

- Dr. Warren Haynes
- Sherail Hinton
- Joanne Jolly
- Travis Judkins
- Sanethia Lynch
- Victor Marrow
- Stephanie Meadows
- Margaret Murga
- Nichole Pitchford
- Gary Redding
Sherida Gholston was the keynote speaker for the event. In her charge to the graduates she gave the graduates several points to remember:
- Taking an opportunity can be scary, always trust your gut.
- Opportunities don’t last forever. Take steps to build on them.
- Opportunities may be short lives. Be quick on your feet.
- Network and build a relationship with others.
- Good things come to those who do things for the right reason.
About the HCC Leadership Institute
The Institute was established in May 2012 under the direction of HCC President/CEO Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. and Sherida Gholston, leadership coordinator. Guest speakers who participate in the Institute come from all walks of life. Many have years of experience working in higher education.
The goal of the Institute is for participants to seek to obtain the knowledge and training that is necessary to become effective leaders within the community college system and beyond. Institute events are funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education PBI Formula Grant.
The 2016 Leadership Calendar included:
- February 5: The Leadership Institute kicks off of its fourth year.
- February 26: Vice President for Legal Services and Risk Management at Fayetteville Technical Community College Dr. David Sullivan presented The Law and Social Media and explained the importance of practicing ethical behavior on social media sites.
- March 11: President of National Search and Educational Consulting Dr. Donny Hunter presented Leading versus Managing and highlighted the characteristics of each.
- April 1: Former North Carolina Community College System Chief Financial Officer Kennon Briggs provided an interactive session that allowed participants to make budgetary decisions at the community college level.
- April 27: Former and current participants were instrumental in launching the Aspen Strategy Team planning meeting. Aspen team members have been charged with addressing the feedback given to the College in March 2016 after the Aspen Institute faculty member visit.
- May 12: Aspen team members met with all College faculty and staff to make plans for the implementation of proposed strategies to address the Aspen Institute findings.
- May 25: Leadership Institute graduation ceremony at The Centre.
