Privacy of Student Records - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that was enacted to protect the privacy of students and their educational records. It gives students access to their education records, an opportunity to seek to have the records amended, and some control over the disclosure of information from the records. Adult Basic Education/GED® Classes Halifax Community College Offers Literacy Education Classes to the Community
This is the time for community members to explore Halifax Community College’s (HCC) Literacy Education program which offers Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED®), Compensatory Education, English-as-a-Second Language, and Self-Improvement components. Classes are available for individuals desiring to improve academically and personally, increase opportunities for gainful employment or promotions, continue educational goals, assist children with homework and/or strengthen skills which makes one more prepared to participate in new or existing industries in the Roanoke Valley and beyond.
HCC has an open-door policy of Workforce & Economic Development Literacy Education programs for everyone who has the need and desire to learn. Any adult, 18 years or older, may enroll in the appropriate HCC Literacy Education program. New students attending on-campus classes are required to attend New Student Orientation. New students attending off-campus classes are required to enroll on the days that the classes meet. Our highly qualified and motivated instructors provide individualized and group instruction and computerized instruction that involve real-life situations. Additionally, instruction is provided by utilizing magazines, newspapers, videos, computerized instruction etc.
On January 2, 2014, the GED® Testing Services began the new 2014 GED® tests! The new GED® tests are computer-based, but not offered online through the internet. The GED® exam offers high school equivalency credentials to individual who did not obtain a high school diploma. Classes do not have registration fees. However, students are required to pay GED® Examination Fees. In North Carolina, all students taking the GED® examination are required to pay a total of $80 which covers the entire battery of GED® tests. Registration for GED® test must be completed online via GED® Testing Services. The 2014 GED® testing series consist of literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. If students don’t pass, they will be able to retake the tests. Currently, North Carolina retakes are free. However, students must retake the test within 12 calendar months of students' initial attempt. The new GED® tests are more in line with the state’s Common Core Standards. These new GED® tests are designed to help prepare students to be college and career ready. For students who have taken GED® tests before 2014 and did not complete GED® requirements, these GED® tests have expired and the individual must start over. However, well-trained instructors are in position to help students reach their educational goals.

Programs of Study
Each college has the responsibility to review at least every five years all programs offered by the College and in the review to address the viability, adequacy, necessity, and consistency with the mission of the programs to the institutional long range plan and the education and workforce needs of the service area (23NCAC.0205). The program review process will provide for a review and evaluation of all programs leading to a certificate, diploma or degree at the College. The purpose of the reviews will be to conduct an in-depth evaluation of the viability of, adequacy of and necessity for each academic program, consistent with the mission of the College. The goal of Campus Security at Halifax Community College is to provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. The college has a sworn police officer and two security officers. The security team patrols HCC facilities and parking lots and provide emergency assistance as needed. Drug and Alcohol Policies /Prevention
To act in accordance with federal laws (the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989), students and employees must receive materials annually that contain standards of conduct, a description of the various laws that apply in that jurisdiction regarding alcohol and drugs, a description of the health risks of drugs and alcohol abuse, a description of counseling and treatment programs that are available, and a statement on the penalty the college will enforce for a violation of the code of conduct.
