Program Guidelines and Outcomes

  1. Practice safe, professional nursing behaviors incorporating personal
    responsibility and accountability for continued competence.
  2. Communicate professionally and effectively with individuals, significant support person(s), and interdisciplinary healthcare team members.
  3.  Integrate knowledge of the individuals holistic needs to provide an
    individual-centered assessment.
  4. Incorporate informatics to formulate evidence-based clinical judgments and management decisions.
  5. Implement safe, caring interventions incorporating documented best practices for individuals in diverse settings.
  6. Develop and implement teaching plans for individuals and/or the nursing team, incorporating teaching and learning principles.
  7. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to advocate for safe, optimistic individual and organizational outcomes.
  8. Manage health care for the individual using cost-effective nursing strategies, quality improvement processes, and current technologies.

  7.  Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) by identifying hazards and
    errors and suggesting changes to improve the client care process for the RN.

What is the difference between each of the nursing programs?

Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) – AAS (5 Semesters) Day

The Associate Degree Nursing program prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of clients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Employment opportunities include hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, physician’s offices, industry, and community agencies.

Practical Nursing (PN) – Diploma (3 Semesters) Day and Evening/Weekend

The Practical Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide nursing care to children and adults. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN). Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation/long-term care/home health facilities, clinics, and physicians’ offices.

Paramedic to RN (ADN) ♦♦♦ LPN to RN (ADN)

Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses

Halifax Community College is proud to partner with the ECU College of Nursing to provide the ENC Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. The RIBN program is for students straight out of high school and is typically four years, while the aRIBN program is for students who have already graduated high school and is typically three years. Students are dually admitted to Halifax Community College and ECU through these programs to obtain their ADN and BSN degrees. This allows students to obtain their BSN for a fraction of the cost.

Therapeutics and Diagnostics Program

Overview of Program

The Therapeutics and Diagnostics Program provides a foundation for success in nursing and allied health curricula. The curriculum prepares students to work under the supervision of licensed health care professionals in performing nursing care and services for persons of all ages. Course work emphasizes growth and development throughout the lifespan, personal care, vital signs, communication, nutrition, medical asepsis, therapeutic activities, accident and fire safety, household environment and equipment management; family resources and services; and employment skills. Graduates of this program may be eligible to be listed on the Division of Health Services Regulation Nurse Aide registry as a Nursing Assistant I and the NC Board of Nursing Registry as a Nursing Assistant II. They may be employed in home health agencies, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, extended care facilities, and doctors’ offices.
