HCC Foundation

History of the Foundation

The Halifax Community College Foundation Inc. was established on April 7, 1976. The leadership of the College determined that new sources of funding would be necessary to enable the College to carry out its planned programs and to assist students who were ineligible for traditional financial aid.

The leadership also recognized that local private funding sources were not fully utilized by the College. As a result, the leadership sought to establish a 501(c)(3) organization as a vehicle for raising tax-deductible funds from the private sector.

Members of the original board of directors were:

In June 1977, the Foundation received IRS classification as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Earliest financial statements indicate that the 1978-79 fund balance was $13,854.78.

The Foundation awards more than 100 scholarships to deserving students. These awards are made possible by individuals, businesses, civic groups and professional groups. The scholarships vary widely in amount and criteria. Some are for a specific program. Some are geared toward financial need, while others are awarded based on academic talent. Some recognize outstanding character and leadership traits of students.

All of our donors have one important thing in common – they care deeply about the future of the Roanoke Valley and invest their resources into the lives of others.

While tuition at Halifax Community College is modest by some standards, for many of our students, it presents a barrier to completing their educational goals. Our donors realize this. They know that dollars invested into an education at HCC will earn big dividends. Recipients complete their education, join the workforce, become taxpayers and stay off public assistance.

The HCC Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization designated by the Internal Revenue Service. We will provide an acknowledgement of your contribution for tax purposes.
