HCC Active Shooter Table Top Exercise
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) faculty, staff and area emergency responders joined together to walk through the steps of what to do in the event of an active shooter incident at HCC. The training session started out with a bang, as three blanks were fired off in the hallway outside of the class, setting the stage for an active shooter on campus. With the start of the exercise participants were given information concerning the scenario and they worked through each phase of the response and recovery of the incident. The participants focused on issues of life safety, incident stabilization and property conservation as they worked through the scenario to ensure a positive outcome for all of those involved.

Active shooter incidents in schools have been around for hundreds of years, with the first mass casualty school shooting in the United States occurring in 1764. However, during the past ten years active shooter incidents appear to be a more common occurrence. Looking at the incidents of other schools, HCC has taken a very proactive stance in student, employee, and guest safety and while it is hoped that an incident like this will never occur the college wants to be prepared. The college runs multiple campus wide drills a year and will continue to do so. There will be future trainings offered on the subject as well as a full scale practical exercise later in the year.
