Message From the President
To Our Guests and Friends,
We are pleased to invite you to Halifax Community College PRIDE of Halifax Male Mentoring Program's 10th Annual Men to Men STEM Summit. This is also the region's first ever Male STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) Summit. Our theme is: Roanoke Valley STEM Men, “Creating the New Normal... Destination: THE FUTURE!"
During the Summit, attendees will explore STEM careers, learn how STEM professions are changing our world, and about opportunities the future holds for STEM graduates. We hope the Summit is the catalyst that illuminates their interest in becoming future STEM leaders.
According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, most jobs of the future will require a basic under-standing of math and science. Additionally, STEM occupations are growing at a rate of 17% per year, earning higher incomes, creating critical thinkers and empowering the next generation of innovators. If STEM education is not improved, the United States will continue to fall in the world ranking and will be unable to maintain its global position.
The PRIDE program's primary goal is to help young men achieve success intellectually, academically, educationally, and spiritually. PRIDE also promotes leadership development, community service, and other human qualities that contribute to good character and responsible citizenship. We want all students to leave the Summit more informed and interested in STEM professions and more confident in their abilities to succeed in STEM careers.
On behalf of our students, trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff, I thank you for attending our Tenth Annual Men To Men STEM Summit.
Dr. Michael A. Elam
