HCC Partners with WSSU for First-in-State Agreement
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) is pleased to announce a new articulation agreement with Winston Salem State University (WSSU).

The agreement between the two campuses allows HCC students who complete the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program to earn a four-year degree online. The MLT program, under the direction of Lonnie Barker, affords students the opportunity to complete a two-year degree and immediately go to work after taking the national board exam. Once students have graduated from HCC and been accepted to WSSU, all of their classes are available to them without having to leave the area.

The four-year program at WSSU is the Clinical Lab Sciences (CLT) degree. With the degree, students have greater earning potential, as well as the ability to move into supervision and management. According to Barker, the four-year program offers advancement opportunities that would otherwise not be available. In addition, the online component makes attaining the degree easier for HCC students.

"We have many students who are single mothers, or working full-time trying to help support their families," Barker said. "The option to complete this degree online gives greater flexibility to our students, and more growth potential here in the Roanoke Valley."

The CLT program at WSSU is specifically designed for students who are working in the field. HCC students accepted into the program are given full credit for their clinical hours taken at HCC. In addition, they receive full credit for 64 hours completed in pursuit of the associates degree. Once they gain acceptance to WSSU, students can return to HCC for the nine pre-professional credit hours that are required for a smooth transition into the four-year program.

"We are delighted to be the first school in the state to develop this partnership with WSSU," said Dr. Michael Elam, president of HCC. "We are committed to increasing opportunities for our students and graduates, and this is another path made available. We are pleased that our residents will have this program in our own community, and we look forward to working with them as they utilize the benefits of the agreement."
