HCC to Present NCCU's Theater Department

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) is pleased to announce that North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is bringing an original dramatization to the Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. Center on March 22.

The NCCU departments of theater and dance, in conjunction with the NCCU University Choir, will present "Speak My Soul," a dramatic presentation at 7 p.m. According to Roberta Laws, director of the University Choir and instructor of voice at NCCU, the presentation is a compilation of writings by Dr. Stephanie Asabi Howard. Howard is the NCCU Theater Department chair.

According to Howard, "Speak My Soul" is "a poetic dramatization that celebrates the strength of the African-American spirit, the wonder of Black Culture, and the greatness of Black History." Throughout the presentation, the poetry of such renowned poets as Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou will be shared. "The words of the poetry will be intertwined with dance and singing the Work Song, the Negro Spiritual, Gospel and the Blues," said Laws.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Joanne Jolly-Ellis at 252-53-4320 or jjolly761@halifaxcc.edu.
