HCC to Begin LPN to RN Transition Program

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) is starting a new program that will increase nursing opportunities in the Roanoke Valley.

Starting March 6, Licensed Nurse Practitioners (LPNs) will have the opportunity to apply to begin a transition program to earn their Registered Nurse (RN) degree. LPNs that have worked a minimum of 1040 hours, and score at least a 70% cumulative average on the HESI A-II exam, will be eligible to apply.

Students will begin classes March 6. Classes for the initial transition will take place from March 6 until May 8, then continue May 21 through July 17. Once the initial transition courses are completed, students will join all other Second Level students to complete the associate degree in nursing (AND) program. They will graduate, and have the educational requirements to take the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) by May 2019.

"LPN-to-RN programs are designed specifically for licensed practical nurses looking to further their education and career path," said Judy Yates, director of the nursing program at HCC. "Using your LPN education and experience as a starting point, LPN-to-RN programs offer a more in-depth curriculum at an accelerated pace."

In recent years, Halifax Regional Medical Center and other healthcare facilities have experienced a shortage in RNs. This program will help to change that concern. "At Halifax Community College, we are proud to help our hospital extend health care services and grow jobs with home-grown talent," said Dr. Bruce Busby, interim vice president of curriculum at HCC.
