HCC Hosts First Ninja Challenge 5K

WELDON, N.C. – Some were wearing traditional running gear – shorts, tennis shoes, and their favorite shirts. Others decided to add extra flair, including a tutu. However, all of them were competing for the chance to be the first HCC Ninja Challenge 5K winner.

On Saturday, April 29, runners from throughout the Roanoke Valley came together at the Halifax Community College (HCC) Roanoke Valley Fitness Interactive Trail (RV FIT) for the first annual HCC Ninja Challenge 5K. Runners started at the entrance to HCC, ran down the Canal Trail to the aqueduct, and returned to campus. To complete the run, they had to finish on an inflatable obstacle course, ending on a 10’ slide.

Paula Short, Health and Wellness coach and assistant wellness director for HCC, headed up the challenge as a way to increase awareness of fitness. “It’s always a great thing when people come together for a run,” she said. “To have people come out, some who lost 60 pounds in the last year to others who have battled back from knee surgery, was a great way to start this annual event.”

The leader at the end of the race was Shaniah Daniels, the race’s youngest participant. Running with her father, Daniels was the first to make it down the slide to finish the race.

Each participant received a medal and a certificate upon completion, and were excited at the prospect of running again next year.

The HCC Ninja Challenge 5K was the kickoff event to the 2017 Family Fest, sponsored by HCC and the Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative.
