HCC Students Warmly Welcomed to New Semester

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) welcomed students back to campus in new ways this fall.

Throughout the first week of school, each student entering campus was greeted by friendly faces and a willingness to help. Members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the P.R.I.D.E. of HCC organization, as well as several faculty and staff, were on hand to ensure that all students knew where to go and what to do.

"Halifax Community College's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society kicked off the fall 2016 semester by welcoming new and returning students back to campus and helping them learn to use their email and online course management accounts," said Gary Redding, faculty member and Phi Theta Kappa advisor for HCC. "We believe that HCC was truly enriched by this project, and many students shared that they now have a more extensive understanding of their classes and the campus."

In addition to greeting and directing students, Phi Theta Kappans and team members from HCC’s Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) worked together to provide technology-based support for students. Members and staff worked with students to assist them in utilizing their Web Advisor, Blackboard, and Gmail accounts in the CAE lab. In the first week, Phi Theta Kappans and CAE staff members assisted more than fifty students.

"Our most recent Aspen report encouraged us to strengthen our onboarding process for new students," said Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr., president of HCC. "This initiative was developed to create a seamless transition to the community college, and to let our students know that they are now a part of the HCC family."

The start of a new school year always brings great excitement, and the potential for great anxiety. For those students attending HCC, these organizations have taken the guesswork out of community college life.
