PRIDE Program inducts class at HCC
 
WELDON, N.C. – The PReparing Men for Intellectual, AcaDemic & Educational Success (PRIDE) of Halifax Male Mentoring Program hosted its annual induction ceremony at The Centre@ Halifax Community College (HCC) on April 13. HCC alum and IBM Software Engineer Andre Anglin was the keynote speaker.

Anglin told the group to remain dedicated to what is important to you. He stated, "You may not be the greatest. When I was here as a student I did not have the best grades, but I had endurance." He also stated that his mother always told him "you have a hard head and soft behind." Anglin also encouraged the group to persevere and never give up.

HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. talked about the beginnings of the male mentoring program at HCC.

"When you leave here, when you walk across the stage, you are going to be the best man that you can be. We will take pride in all that you do," said Griffin.

Along with being inducted into PRIDE, several men were recognized for receiving scholarships as well as recognitions as for Men of Distinction (MOD)status.MOD is a special recognition component of the PRIDE of Halifax Male Mentoring Program and represents the highest level of achievement for participants. The MOD is reserved for men who have demonstrated excellence in academic performance, personal growth, academic improvement and professional development. It is also awarded for other noteworthy acts that serve the welfare of others including personal, social and community endeavors.

Select members were also recognized as part of the Grooming Exceptional Men (GEMs) Program, which recognizes men who uphold high standards of personal and professional presentation of themselves through dress, attitude and behavior. GEMs eligibility also includes personal health, hygiene and respect for others.

PRIDE is a college success, leadership and professional development program designed to enhance student satisfaction, academic success, retention, graduation and four-year college transfer rates. PRIDE fosters partnerships between students, learning coaches (success coaches trained in mentoring, counseling, developmental advising, instruction, career exploration, financial planning, etc.), faculty, staff, professional mentors, academic advisors, tutors and financial aid advisors.
