Rev. Richard Allen stamp unveiled at HCC Stamp Dedication

WELDON, N.C. – The 2016 Lyceum Series of Special Events at Halifax Community College (HCC) kicked off with the ninth annual U.S. Postal Service® Stamp Dedication on Feb. 3 at The Centre.

This year, a stamp honoring Rev. Richard Allen was dedicated.

About the Stamp:
Preacher, activist and civic leader Richard Allen (1760–1831) was an inspiring figure whose life and work resonate profoundly in American history. This stamp coincides with the 200th anniversary of Allen’s founding of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, one of the most important institutions in African-American life, as well as his election as its first bishop.

The stamp art is a portrait of Allen, a detail from an 1876 print titled “Bishops of the A.M.E. Church.” Featuring Allen in the center surrounded by ten other bishops and six historical vignettes, the print is from the collection of the Library Company of Philadelphia.

During the ceremony HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. presided; Jordan Harvey, HCC student, led the Pledge of Allegiance; Dana Scott, HCC employee, led “Lift Every Voice and Sing”; HCC Board of Trustees Chair Michael Felt delivered greetings; Weldon Postmaster Andrea Green made acknowledgements; Griffin, Green, Felt and Communications Coordinator (Greensboro District) Carlotta Banks unveiled the stamp. Communications Instructor Sharon Askew and students from her public speaking class presented “Richard Allen: He heard Our Cries.”

Lunch was provided by Abrams Catering.
