HCC students awarded GlaxoSmithKline Scholarships
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) students Jaray Darden and Erika Vaughan have been selected as recipients of the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Teacher Preparation Scholarship/Loan Program for the 2012-13 year. The scholarship program benefits prospective teachers.

A resident of Garysburg, Darden is a first semester student enrolled in HCC’s teacher prep program. He is interested in middle school education. "The scholarship will help me focus on school without worrying about finances. It will provide supplemental income," said Darden.

A resident of Halifax, Vaughan is a second semester student enrolled in the biology teacher prep program. She plans to transfer into the Elizabeth City State University Teacher Prep program after finishing her studies at the College. She is interested in high school education. "On the financial side, it helps me with being a one-parent home. I can prepare myself without worrying about the cost of books. Plus, it will keep me from having to get a loan," said Vaughan.

The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Inc., the North Carolina General Assembly and Bank of America have contributed more than $2 million to establish an endowment within the North Carolina Community College Foundation to support an expanded role for community colleges in teacher preparation. The endowment funds an annual grant program that provides scholarships for prospective teachers who are enrolled in community college degree programs tied to baccalaureate completion programs.

Scholarship awards are awarded to students who are enrolled full-time in their first or second year of a community college degree program. Students must also be enrolled in a program that is transferable to a bachelor’s degree in elementary or secondary education. An award of $2,500 per semester for two consecutive semesters of full-time study was awarded.
