HCC's Holley attends Adult Basic Skills Institute at Appalachian State
 
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) Literacy Skills Specialist George Holley was one of 57 participants in the Adult Basic Skills Professional Development's Institute 2012 from May 20-25 at Appalachian State University.

Sponsored by the North Carolina Community College System and Appalachian State University, the institute provides training and certification of adult basic skills trainers and professional development for adult basic skills instructors, coordinators and directors. Institute 2012 was titled "Creating Success Using Technology."

Participants spent 35 hours in training centered on research-proven techniques for using technology to plan and deliver effective professional development as well as integrating technology in the classroom to improve learning outcomes. Strategies for using technology to engage students, enrich their learning and help them transition to postsecondary education were also taught. Holley will use this training to design and deliver professional development for his colleagues at HCC during the upcoming year.

Appalachian State University has hosted Adult Basic Skills Professional Development institutes since 1988. More than 2,000 adult basic skills staff have received training at the institute since its inception.
