HCC seeks local African-American Heroes nominations |

WELDON, N.C. – Four years ago, Halifax Community College held its first-ever “Saluting Our African-American Heroes“ event. Due to their accomplishments, several people from the community have been recognized for their hard work and dedication.
“These heroes have bettered our quality of life in the Roanoke Valley and their contributions have made significant impacts on many people. This event will highlight their devotion to our community,“ said Kim Edwards, chair of the Saluting Our African-American Heroes committee.
To continue that tradition, nominations are now being accepted for this year’s hero event. Nominations will be accepted through
Friday, Jan. 6 by mail or online submission. The nomination includes completion of a short form and submission of a brief essay detailing qualities in identified areas.
“These awards are meant to recognize regular, hard-working individuals. A nominee does not have to be ‘high profile’ in order to be honored,“ said Shauna Jones, who is collecting the nominations.
Along with this basic information, the nomination must include an essay that addresses each of four qualities listed below that are used as the selection criteria. The narrative should expand and focus on specific examples that demonstrate the nominee’s commitment and unique contributions to the Roanoke Valley. Any citizen of the African-American community is eligible to be considered for this nomination.
The narrative should describe the nominee’s qualities in the following areas:
- Commitment and contributions to the community
- Unselfish devotion to others
- Initiative, innovation and leadership in the region
- Willingness to share time and wisdom through service to the community and its citizens
For more details or a nomination form, call 252-536-6436 or e-mail joness@halifaxcc.edu. Nominations can be submitted online at the HCC website, www.halifaxcc.edu (click on the Saluting Our African-American Heroes link). Recognition of our heroes will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, in The Centre.
