CRC Program teams up with Employment Security Commission
Partnership will help businesses and individuals

In a bad economy, job seekers need all the tools available to them to land a job. Effective immediately, staff at the North Carolina Employment Security Commission will be discussing the benefits of Career Readiness Certification (CRC) with clients. The CRC is a new program offered by Halifax Community College’s (HCC) Continuing Education Division.  It is an assessment-based credential that gives employers and career seekers a uniform measure of key workplace skills.

“Earning the CRC is a real benefit. It can help get your foot in the door,” explained Tommy McKnight, ESC manager. “Employers today are looking for particular skill sets rather than work history. They want to see what kind of skills workers have that would be transferable from one position to another and even one job to another. The CRC assesses those skills. If workers need to add some skills, they can go ahead and get some training to improve those work skills.”

McKnight will be joined by HCC Business & Industry Coordinator/Instructor Larry Crisafulli for visits to area businesses to promote the program. “This really is a partnership,” commented Crisafulli. “Employers will be seeing more of us in the future.”

With more than 80 percent of all jobs projected to require skills beyond those earned in high school by 2010, the program is designed to meet the needs of both employers and job seekers in a transitioning economy. The certificate is portable and recognized nationwide.

For employers, CRC assesses job skills and simplifies hiring by streamlining the application process, matching the right person with the job.  This program increases skill levels, reduces training time and has reduced turnover of existing employees. For individuals, CRC increases a person’s chances for employment and promotion, focusing on employment-related competencies needed in a job.

Individuals can take a pre-test on the HCC campus to find out the level of their skills at no charge. There is a $30 fee for official testing and certification ($10 each for tests in reading, math, and locating information).  Scholarships and financial assistance are available to those who qualify. The program is offered at no cost to those who qualify as underemployed and unemployed. For more information about CRC, visit www.crcnc.org, or call Larry Crisafulli at (252) 538-4339, crc@halifaxcc.net.
