Advising Forum held at HCC

WELDON, N.C. – The Halifax Community College (HCC) Academic and Student Services Advising Committee held a “Completion by Design: A Focus on Advising” forum on April 16. The focus of the forum was to propose ideas that may improve the advising experience at HCC.

Some ideas included:
  • Advising syllabus that would be given to each student during the admissions process and would include campus contact information as well as WebAdvisor, Gmail and Blackboard log-in information and a semester checklist
  • Training offered to advisors with noted differences between “advising” and “registering” students
  • Improvement of career and transfer resources
  • Best ways to disseminate information to students about advising and registration including email, flyers, Blackboard postings, course announcement page postings, HCC homepage, postcards, etc.
All attendees were asked to complete a short questionnaire to help rate the potential usefulness of each idea. Sarah Nesbit, committee chair, and Sherida Gholston, committee co-chair, as well as Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Deryl Davis Fulmer led the meeting
