HCC PRIDE adopts four families for the holidays

WELDON, N.C. – Thanks to the generosity of Halifax Community College (HCC) students, faculty and staff, Cofield Funeral Home, and Frank V. Avent III, former chair of the HCC Board of Trustees, the PReparing men for Intellectual, acaDemic, & Educational success (PRIDE) of Halifax Male Mentoring Program was able to adopt four families for the 2014 Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, each family received a turkey with all the fixings, along with other non-perishables. The families were grateful for the contributions.

Just prior to Thanksgiving, however, PRIDE staff and student members discovered that several of the families also had children who faced the possibility of waking up Christmas morning to an empty tree. Although a toy drive was not in the original plan, the group went into action, asking for donations of toys and/or monies in addition to Christmas dinner items.

The response helped PRIDE to provide gifts to five children ages 1, 2, 4, 7 and 8. PRIDE staff and students were overjoyed at the opportunity to help the families through what can be a tough time of the year. The group looks forward to repeating the experience and hopes to do more in the coming years.
