Halifax Community College Trustee Board Report
August 2014
 
WELDON, N.C. – The Halifax Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees met on Aug. 26 for their monthly meeting.

Trustee Sammy Webb and Student Government Association President DeAntré Richardson were sworn in during the meeting.

Golden LEAF Foundation President Dan Gerlach presented a $450,000 check to HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. and HCC Board of Trustees Chair Bernella DeLaMora. The funds were made possible through a Golden LEAF Foundation grant that HCC recently received. The grant will provide upgrades in the College's industrial training program. The grant funds will enable HCC to update its equipment to industry standards and provide for additional third-party credentials. The upgrades will focus on the areas of maintenance, machining, welding and fabrication.

Trustees also elected board officers. For the 2014-15 year, DeLaMora will continue to serve as chair, Michael Felt will serve as vice chair and Griffin will serve as secretary to the board.

Griffin presented the President’s Report to the board. Points of information included:
  • The Halifax County Board of Commissioners approved the reimbursement for bat exclusion at HCC.
  • Cummins Business Services Inc. has signed on as a platinum sponsor for the upcoming golf tournament.
  • Cummins Rocky Mount Engine is in the process of donating a diesel engine for the Transportation Systems Technology program.
  • The city of Roanoke Rapids has donated a 2008 Dodge Charger for the transportation program to be used for the teaching of engine repair, electrical systems, computerized diagnostics, etc.
  • Campus signage including directional and building signs are being updated through the PBI Formula grant.
  • Progress is being made on the Roanoke Valley Fitness Interactive Trail project.
  • The Cosmetology Department received an update this summer.
  • HCC has new staging for The Centre.
  • The HCC Child Care Center will work with the CADA Head Start Program to provide training for 15 children. The children will be blended into the classrooms at the center.
  • The request for the Cooperative Innovative High School agreement between HCC and the Roanoke Valley Early College High School was approved by the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges through 2018-19.
  • The state budget for HCC was reviewed.
  • An enrollment update was given. Mini-semester enrollment has begun for classes beginning in October.
  • An update on HCC grants was provided.
  • A report from the HCC Small Business Center was shared.
Updates were given on the Student Satisfaction Survey for the spring 2014 semester, USA Today Readership Program, Hollister project, National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation, financial reports, special events and the HCC Foundation Inc.’s campus fund drive, scholarships and the Brick By Brick Campaign. An update on Student Government Association activities was also provided.
