HCC students awarded SECU Foundation Continuing Education scholarships

WELDON, N.C. – In 2012, the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation established a Continuing Education Scholarship Program to help remove financial barriers for students seeking to gain new and/or upgrade current job-related skills. Annually, the program provides a total of 580 scholarships—10 scholarships at $750 each to all 58 community colleges. Target groups for the program are unemployment insurance claimants, unemployed and underemployed adults, military veterans and members of the North Carolina National Guard.

With the addition of the Continuing Education Scholarship Program, this brings the Foundation’s commitment to the N.C. Community College System to more than $1 million. The funding cycle for the scholarships is by fiscal year—July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

Halifax Community College (HCC) students who are recipients of the scholarship for the spring semester include:

  • Kenyetta Benthall
  • Carrie Harris
  • Patricia McDermott
  • Wyzle Samuel
  • Norma Saunders
The scholarship program is administered through the College’s Continuing Education Department in collaboration with the Financial Aid Office. Scholarships are need-based and students had to submit an application to the College’s designee. Applications were reviewed by a scholarship selection committee.
