WELDON, N.C. – A Littleton native and lifelong Northampton/Halifax County resident, Mary Johnson knows a thing or two about child care—as she should. She has been an employee of the Halifax Community College (HCC) Child Care Center since 1996.

Johnson earned her GED from HCC and continued on to earn her Associate of Social Services degree in 1995. Her work as an HCC employee began one year later, and she now cites "watching the children grow and learn things on their own" as the best part of her job.

Johnson recently completed her bachelor’s degree at Ashford University, and has already begun work on her master’s degree. She plans to have completed her program in the fall of next year.

"The teachers are my motivation," said Johnson. She says it is hard for some to want to further their education when teachers may not have the best salary incentives, but she believes it to be worth it, especially for the children. "There is always something new to be learned that will help the kids.”"

Completing a bachelor's degree at age 54 was no easy task, but Johnson offered this advice to anyone looking to continue their education: do just that—continue. "I could be retired working on my doctorate degree. You never know." Non-traditional students should not let a time gap between degrees prevent them from working towards their education, she added.
