Health Career Opportunities Program held at HCC

WELDON, N.C. – On Dec. 3-7, Halifax Community College (HCC) hosted a Health Career Opportunities Program as part of the New Generation Careers grant that was awarded to HCC in July 2012. More than 22 students participated in the training and all participants were awarded certificates of completion.

The program was offered through the HCC JobLink office. Students affiliated with Regeneration Development Group also participated. The training was provided by Area L Area Health Education Center (AHEC)-Turning Point Regional Allied Health Roundtable for the New Generations program. The Turning Point Workforce Development Board is supporting many project enrollees financially. One hundred percent of those who completed the AHEC Career Awareness training are now enrolled in a linking Nurses' Assistant 1 class at HCC.

Alice J. Schenall with Area L AHEC gave an overview of the program. "It is important to understand the market you’re approaching," she advised participants as they began the week of training.

Pitt Community College Director of Healthcare Programs for Continuing Education & Community Development Sidette Brown helped students complete health career assessments.

"Programs like these are great because they are pipeline programs that can push students from the CNA level, higher to CNA II and on to nursing. We want to let them know that this is their foot in the door," said Brown. "We want to get people in our community educated and build up our workforce."

Instructors and presenters for the week also included HCC Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) instructor Shelia Aycock, Betty West, an area registered nurse and Trionti Whitaker, an HCC CNA graduate and a current practicing nurses assistant. Phyllis Chavis of the New Generation Group from Scotland Neck was also a presenter and contributor.

HCC JobLink Case Manager Linda Smith is serving as the project assistant and as a case manager. HCC JobLink Case Manager Gladys Askew is serving as a case manager and HCC JobLink Manager John Foriest is serving as New Generations project manager.

The N.C. Rural Economic Development Center awarded the College a $100,000 New Generation Careers grant to train 56 youth, ages 18-30, and place 41 in jobs in Halifax and Northampton counties. The grant funds a program called HCC New Generations Careers that incorporates Human Resource Development training and Career Readiness Certification and prepares individuals to enroll in nursing assistant, industrial maintenance and computer courses.

According to the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center Inc. website, the grants were made possible by N.C. General Assembly appropriations, state Clean Water bonds and other corporate and institutional partners. For more information, visit http://www.ncruralcenter.org/.
