WELDON, N.C. Light sport aircraft manufacturer LSA America Inc. needed welders who could work with chromoly steel, a lightweight material used in the production of planes, bicycles, roll cages and NASCAR race cars. So, Halifax Community College (HCC) Continuing Education's Business & Industry Coordinator Larry Crisafulli was contacted for help. Crisafulli found an instructor to teach HCC welding students how to weld the material.

LSA America's President Douglas M. Hempstead then visited campus and invited students to complete a job application, which involved a welding test. Two HCC students, Chris Jenkins and James Simmons, now graduates, were hired.

"What they were taught in that [welding] shop allowed them to adapt to this new metal," said Crisafulli. HCC welding instructors also visited the LSA America facility. Now, welding chromoly will be incorporated into the welding program.

Hempstead explained, "Welding is a key factor and the quality and productivity have to be good. We took a couple of very good people and made them even better. They are doing tremendous work for us."

Simmons added, "My initial goal when I was at HCC was to build NASCAR frames and that's working with chromoly steel. So, I'm getting good experience here."
