Halifax Community College Board of Trustees Chairman, Dr. Stanley Edwards, received the 2008 Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Regional Trustee Leadership Award for the southern region earlier this month in New York City during the 39th Annual Community College Leadership Congress. The Congress was held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square.

ACCT awards recognize the contributions made by trustees, chief executive officers, faculty members, professional board staff and equity programs. Those recognized at the regional level contend for national awards, for which each regional recipient serves as his or her region’s national-level nominee. For each category, one outstanding honoree was selected from one of the five U.S. regions including Central, Northeastern, Pacific, Southern, and Western.

Edwards was unanimously nominated by the HCC Board of Trustees at the May 27 meeting. After learning that he had received the award in August, Edwards stated, “I am very humbled by this recognition from my colleagues in the southern region and the HCC Board of Trustees. We are a team at HCC and this award is not for me personally, but is for all members of the board of trustees at our college. I could not do my job without the trust and support of the total HCC Board of Trustees.”

Edwards serves many other community organizations including the Weldon City Board of Education (vice-chair), First Baptist Church of Weldon (deacon), Upper Coastal Plains Learning Council (member), and the Weldon-Halifax Community Center (Board of Directors member). He received a B.S. degree from Livingstone College; M.S. degree from North Carolina A & T State University; Advanced Degree from N.C. Central University; and, a Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University. He is married to the former Bertha Kornegay and has three children: Mark, Valerie, and DeVaughn.
